City 2 set for a refurbishment

AG Real Estate has announced a major refurbishment to the best-known shopping centre in the centre of Brussels. City2, at the Place Rogier / Rue Neuve, will see its interior modified, including a central food court at ground floor level, although the facade is not set to change. Works are set to begin in the first quarter of next year, and last for around eighteen months. The centre will remain open for shopping during this period.

The interior will be entirely remodelled, once the permit – which has already been lodged – is granted. Quoted by the RTBF, Barthélemy de Callataÿ, project manager development at AG Real Estate, explains some of the company’s thinking: “We really want to create a quality place where it is pleasant to walk around, and not a place where you have to zig-zag between the plants and kiosks…”

City 2 was last renovated around 17 years ago, and among other factors, it will shortly see the added competition of Docks Bruxsel. AG Real Estate is expecting the full year visitor figures (around 13 million) to fall by about 2% this year, another reason for undertaking the 40 million Euro redesign.
