Ixelles Barracks back on track

There has been a further move in the long-standing saga of the future of the barracks (Caserne Fritz-Toussaint) located in Ixelles along the Boulevard Général Jacques. The purchase of this site by the Brussels Capital Region is now believed to be imminent, as the Regional government has approved the sum of 30 million Euros for the acquisition of the site. It is estimated that a further 45 million Euros will be required for the redevelopment, which will be carried out by regional agency SAU.

The objective is that around 1,900 apartments will be created on the site from the Federal State, which would make this one of the largest redevelopment projects anywhere in Belgium. The residential accommodation in question is focused on student housing, making this in part a ‘University City’ just across the road from both the Free University of Brussels (ULB/VUB) and from Etterbeek railway station. This part of Brussels is also served by tram lines running down the centre of the boulevard.

Contemporary trends in project development are for mixed use concepts, however, and this scheme will be no different. It will include a company incubator, a crèche and other types of residential accommodation. In numerical terms, the SAU talks of some 20,000 m² of student housing, 20,000 m² of other types of housing and 15,000 m² of other function
