Renewable energy innovation in Godinne hospital

The move towards environmentally-friendly energy supply in buildings took a major and concrete step forward on Friday, with the inauguration of a new hospital at Godinne, in the Province of Namur.

The hospital is equipped with the very first tri-generation unit in Belgium, which undertakes the gasification of biomass. This unit – called NOTAR® and developed by Xylowatt – is fed on waste wood and wood remains into gas. This wood comes from the upkeep of parks and roadsides, branches etc. from forestry upkeep, recycled pallets, packaging…etc. The result is that an impressive 40% of the hospital’s electricity needs will be covered, along with 65% of hot water (both sanitary and heating) and 40% of the energy needed for cooling. Another innovation is that the generator does not produce any residual tar, which would otherwise need treating and thus have a secondary impact on the environment.

The project has been co-financed by Belfius Bank and the European Investment Bank, within the framework of facilitating investment in energy efficiency and the non-centralised production of renewable energy.
