Belfius Smart Cities and EIB in La Panne initiative

A relatively small operation in the seaside town of La Panne is nevertheless worthy of attention because it involves both the healthcare sector, and is a first in terms of investment.

The Sint-Bernadus rest and care home in the town represents the first time a non-profit organisation within the healthcare sector in Flanders, has received funding from the Belfius Smart Cities programme and from the European Investment Bank.

Once completed, the extension and renovation/ reconstruction works on this home will mean that it offers 120 rooms, 4 short stay rooms and 2 convalescence residences, along with 23 serviced residences. There will also be a social restaurant to serve seniors of La Panne in need, with meals at low prices. Later, a night-time reception centre may be added. This will enable those elderly people who so wish, to continue to live at home during the day, but to benefit from a place to sleep at night, where they can be taken care of and where they will be in safety.
