National stadium gets a 'No go'
The final nail in the coffin of the national stadium appears to have been hammered in by Flemish Territorial Development Minister Joke Schauvliege (photo). She has said that she will not grant the construction and operating permit for the stadium on the ‘Parking C’ of the Heysel plateau.
In doing this, the Minister is thus following the opinion of the regional environmental permit commission, which gave a negative opinion some time ago. The reasons for the non-granting of the necessary permits, report Belga and L’Echo, are the environmental nuisance and risk caused by the construction. These would not be able, says the Minister, to be reduced to an acceptable level.
It remains to be seen whether developers Ghelamco (or anyone else) has any further move to make within this troubled dossier. It will be recalled that UEFA had already decided a while ago not to include Brussels in the cities to host matches of the 2020 European championships.
