There has been progress made in the Biestebroeck district, part of the City of Brussels’ strategic development plan for the canal zone.

Residential development agency SLRB, along with Brussels development agency citydev.brussels, have launched a call for tenders for the construction/renovation of around 400 residential units, two schools and 15,000 m² of economic activity. The residential units will be split into 280 of social housing and 120 medium rent.

The site is located at the entry to the city, in Anderlecht between the Rue de la Petite Ile and the Rue des Goujons. The objective is to transform this industrial activities and commercial zone into a new city district with a high mix of functions.

The call for tenders is looking for a multi-disciplinary team which will include a number of architectural bureaux. Brussels bouwmeester Kristiaan Borret has indicated that he believes there is an opportunity for young teams to be part of the alliances.
