Parking 58 closes at 59

While we were all away, one of the emblematic constructions (although hardly the most attractive!) of the Universal exhibition of 1958, finally closed its doors. Parking 58, located just behind the Boulevard Anspach and close to the Place de Brouckère, saw the last car drive out on August 1st.

The architecture, by Abraham Lipsky, had recourse to steel and concrete pillars which was unusual for the time but enabled parking spaces of 4m x 2 m. This was also the first multi-storey car park in Brussels. The car park also marked the start of Interparking, founded by the brothers De Clercq, who had seen such edifices in the United States. Interparking is now part of AG Real Estate, and its headquarters, which had been within Parking 58, will move to the Rue Brederode, between the Porte de Namur and the Place Royale.

It has of course been known for some time that this site is to be redeveloped into a new administrative centre for the City of Brussels.
