Brussels Canal : Biestebroeck back in the spotlight

The Brussels Master Architect Kristiaan Borret has issued a reminder that tenders are required for one of the larges turban projects in the ‘Canal Plan’. This is ‘Petite Ile- CitygateII’ the SLRB/citydev project at Biestebroeck, and the stakes for the city of Brussels are high.

In calling for multi-disciplinary teams including a number of architects, Kristiaan Borret points out that this development is designed to create a whole new city district. It is strategically located close to the entrance to the Ring at Anderlecht, and yet less than 10 minutes walk from South Station.

The requirement is to build a mixed use development comprising around 400 homes (280 social and 120 medium rent), along with 2 schools and some 15,000 m² of economic activity space. All this is within the concept of the ‘productive city’, which explains the mixing together of living and working space in one place. Kristiaan Borret believes the project represents an opportunity for young teams to get together with more experienced bureaux, to submit proposals. Mobility will be another important aspect of the proposals.
