MediaPark in the spotlight at Mipim

A major presentation by the Brussels capital Region at Mipim outlined the philosophy and importance of the MediaPark project at Reyers (Schaerbeek). The SAU, along with Brussels foreign Trade Minister Cécile Jodogne, pointed out that the Region now owns the entirety of the site with the exception of the plots on which the new RTBF and RTB television stations will be built. They also said that though the plans for the overall site are well defined, they are still able to be adapted as new ideas or requirements come to light. The project is a joint effort by the Brussels Capital Region, the RTBF, VRT and the commune of Schaerbeek, along with the private companies taking part.

Eventually, some 300,000 m² will emerge on this site, of which the TV stations will represent around d 95,000 m²a media school 20,000 m², and 2,500 residential units will be another major element. There will be retailing, leisure and sports facilities, all set around a public park of some eight hectares. All of the ground floor levels will be ‘active’, adding to the conviviality and functionality of the district.

It is indeed the notion of an open district which is very much the guiding principle behind Mediapark. The current site is totally enclosed with hardly any free access by the public, but the new version will be the exact opposite. The park will represent the access element for the public, and the desire is to make this district a destination area where people will want to come.

In terms of timing, the entire project will be undertaken between now and 2028, with the television stations occupying their new buildings during the 2021 to 2023 period. Their existing buildings have to remain in operation until the new ones are ready.
