Go-ahead for Brussels Westland Shopping Center works

AG Real Estate is reporting that its planned renovation of the Westland Shopping Centre in Anderlecht has moved to a definitive stage. The latest step is as a result of there having been no objections lodged to the developer’s plans for a total relooking of the centre. The permits thus became officially granted this week.

AG is planning to bring the shopping centre totally up to date – it is not far short of 50 years old (1972) and has never undergone any major rethink. Architects DDS+ are to rework the facades and create more harmonious areas, with better visibility for the two entrances. Also mandated is interior architectural bureau Outsign who will work on the decoration. The interior will in particular see extra natural light, more vegetation and better communication between the floors. Much of the work will be carried out at night to enable the shops to function correctly.

Three interior areas are set to be added to the centre: Sunset Plaza, with an array of leisure activities, Westland Event with various types of entertainment and pop-up stores, and Volière 2.0 for relaxation. There will also be a dedicated ‘food & beverage’ area, more car parking, and better sanitary facilities.

When it is complete, the new Westland shopping centre will extend to around 50,000 m² of retail space with 2,350 parking spaces. BREEAM ‘Very Good’ or ‘Excellent’ certification is being targeted. Works are expected to start at the end of the first quarter of this year (in other words just a few weeks from now) and continue until around the end of 2019.
