Developer Besix has announced that it has been selected to build the Belgian Pavilion for the 2020 Universal Exhibition in Dubai. This success follows a public call for tenders launched by The General Belgian Commission for International Exhibitions (BelExpo), a federal agency created in 2017 for just this type of event. The winning proposition is a joint effort by Besix with Assar Architects, Vincent Callebaut Architectures and Krafthaus.

The name ‘Green Arch’ is easy to understand. The building is in the form of an arch and is covered with vegetation, bringing together scientific and engineering techniques with latest generation intelligent technologies. The concept behind the building, Besix points out, is ‘Smart & Green Belgium 2050’, and the intent is to give visitors a presentation of Belgium focusing on innovative mobility and its future. Another view of the future of cities with a focus in the human and on biodiversity, using new technologies as appropriate, forms part of the core values which Green Arch is trying to reflect.

The Belgian Pavilion was selected thanks to its ability to respond to several criteria. These include, firstly, a sustainable and intelligently ventilated building, natural daylight filtering, use of renewable energies, optimal use of water. Along with these come a holistic view of the lifecycle of materials, favouring the circular economy, waste segregation, heat control via the vegetation, and encouraging an eco-responsible way of life.

The theme of the Dubai exhibition reflects the thinking behind the Besix approach: ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’.
