Defence site moving to concrete phase

The latest call for tenders published by the Bouwmeester’s office today involves a large and iconic site in Evere. Since NATO moved its headquarters across the Boulevard Léopold III to its new premises, the site has been waiting for a new affectation. It is also the case that the Defence facilities located on the site will be moved to a more compact building on the corner.

The Bouwmeester is therefore looking to redevelop this 90 hectare site into a new mixed use district. This will include an urban park area and an ecological corridor with a forest zone, of at least 20 hectares. The Brussels and Flemish Regions are now looking to move towards the planning stage. The Bouwmeester points out that challenges include the very size of the site, the fact that the desires of two regions have to be reconciled (again) and the edge of town location with poor accessibility by public transport.

The Strategy department of Perspective.brussels, the Bouwmeester points out, along with the Flemish government’s Environment department, is launching a call for a Regional Spatial Layout Plan (GRUP and a guideline Layout Plan (PAD). The plans will involve the whole of the defence site along with the cemeteries located in this zone, and will have to include an environmental impact report.
