Motel One set for Antwerp

Tim Harrup

Following the opening of its Brussels hotel on the Rue Royale close to the Colonne du Congrès just a few years ago, ‘Motel One’ is now expanding to Belgium’s second city, Antwerp. The company had issued a rigorous set of criteria, and it was by persuading developer Cores to change the destination of a residential project on the Oever & Scheldeken square that broker Belsquare, who advised Motel One, was able to respond to these. Belsquare indicates that it had been looking for suitable premises for some time and when this site was proposed it was presented to Motel One and they were immediately convinced.

This is the first time that Cores has developed a hotel, and along with Motel One it has selected Antwerp-based Binst Architects to take care of the design, which will be in keeping with the character of the area.

Where timing is concerned, works on the 221-room hotel are scheduled to start at the end of this year, giving time for the current occupants (a care centre) of the existing building to move to new premises first. The opening of the hotel would then take place in 2024. Around half of the site area will be unconstructed, giving space for an outdoor green area.
