Covid: 3,000 more empty stores by the end of 2021?

According to retail consultancy firm Locatus, over the next 18 months, more than 20,000 retail units currently in operation (shops, restaurants and services) are at risk of closing. But not all of these business premises are set to remain vacant, as these closures could be offset by around 85% of them re-opening. This would mean that ultimately 15% of this total – around 3,000 units – would effectively become vacant.

The 24,000 commercial properties currently vacant in Belgium could therefore rise to 27,000 by the end of 2021, due to the Covid-19 crisis and confinement measures, i.e. a vacancy rate of 13.3%. The consequences of the crisis are felt more in large urban centers, in cities that depend heavily on tourism, and in areas where there are normally large numbers of civil servants and office workers.
