Ilot St. Roch in Nivelles to be 'green lung'

TOWN PLANNING
Tim Harrup

Developer Immobel and architects DDS+ are behind the latest project to redevelop a former industrial site and bring a new city district into being. Close to the historic town centre and to the Ravel cycle route, the Ilot St. Roch will see some 291 housing units, three units for professional offices, two retail units and a crèche. Some 553 parking spaces will also be provided. New pedestrian walkways and an urban park are designed to enable the exterior space to represent a calm area for people to meet, a ‘green lung at the entrance to the town’. The architects say that this project stands apart from traditional building types through its functional mix and its goal of finding new ways of living in the city. In terms of the environment, sustainable materials such as brick are being used, and particular attention is paid to insulation and to water, waste and energy management. In total, this project amounts to just over 33,000 m² of above ground construction and 16,000 m² below ground. The planning permit has been obtained this year but details have not been released of when works will be underway.
